Is there a way to tell if they changed the evaporator core when I look at it?

2012 Toyota Yaris "Fleet" vehicle 4-dr sedan
36k mi
Purchased last Aug from another dealership
Car came from Southern state

"Dirty Sock" odor appeared a month ago. Dealership says they changed evap core but the car came back reeking heavily of A/C cleaning kit chemicals which will not go away no matter how many hours I keep blowers on over two weeks now. New cabin filter or no cabin filter makes no difference.

I saw the car when the whole dash was gutted so I believe they tried but made a mistake ordering parts. I asked for paperwork which shows they ordered a heater core INSTEAD which they admitted as if that were the agreement all along. I believe they chemicalled up the old existing EVAP core then put the car back together to rush it out of the shop (they have very limited space.)

Now today they said they "investigated further" and I got a long story about how it was the evap core after all they changed. They are opening up car tomorrow for me to prove I have a new evap core. How can I tell just by looking other than the obvious shiny new appearance I should see?

I wonder if they dipped the old one in chemicals, especially when I asked specifically for no chemicals?

Thank you guys

Unless it is covered with oily lint, you won't be able to tell the difference. If the old one is clean, it looks just like a new one. The aluminum may be a little shinier on the new one.

Thanks HT.
Can I have it - and the heater core - dipped to soak in water and soap to get chemicals out of coils/fins? Or will that ruin the parts? Also, if they never changed evap core, the mold and stuff causing the dirty sick smell is still deep inside the core, right?

That would be a foolish waste of time. If you go as far as removing it from the car, just replace it with a new one.

OP: You've mentioned both A/C evap core and heater core and seems original complaint was a moldy odor (dirty socks) is close enough for me.

You asked not to use chems? Whatever. Dang mold if real and real bad has caused people to sell cars! Whatever you are noticing now is from whatever attempt which would call for taking things apart in cases.

For now try plain Lysol while running "fresh" air down thru cowls by wipers with system blowing air and as well as you can with system off into panel vents or wherever.

Not sure what chems you smell? If anything needed sealing to get at all this I would have guessed it would have gone away if just that by now.

Hope not but if this was a flood car it could be quite a battle,

T

I'm guessing it wasn't a private message of love and gratitude?

You sure, I was thinking a picture of candles and some Barry White in the background.
