I have the same car. I got it 7 yrs ago, blowing ice cold, then same as OPs, wouldn't stay on. My attempts to recharge failed. Mechanic refit it and it died the next yr. New guy refilled it, after a proper evac, with sealer and and it has been perfect ever since. Why the sealer hate?

I moved this into its own thread. Please do not hijack other threads

The sealer hate is for many valid reasons. First, it is hack work by its very definition. If you have a leak, you have a defective part. You need to diagnose the bad part and install a proper replacement part. This stuff isn't some great miracle healer, its not jesus-134a. This sealer rarely works, and for the occasional person such as yourself who got very lucky your testimony perpetuates the myth that this stuff is acceptable to use, a proper way to repair things, and just as good as new parts without the expense.

These leak sealers like to seal up a lot more than the leak you got lucky to fix. They like to plug up things that should not be plugged, like orifice tubes. You somehow got away without that, but say you didn't. You figure oh well, I'm just going to sell the car soon anyhow. So the next guy gets it and wants to get the AC working and takes it to a repair shop. He doesn't know it has sealant in it, and even if he did I doubt he would tell the shop about it. The shop realizes they need to evacuate the system, and draws into their $6000+ dollar machine the garbage you put in it. This now has not only contaminated all the refrigerant in the tank, it gets into the reclamation parts of the machine and does very expensive damage that they now how to pay for. They can't do any AC work to pay the bills since your death kit trashed their machine. Does the shop deserve that? By federal law, even if they do know the system has leak sealer they legally cannot vent it to the atmosphere, it must go into their machine to ruin it.

After they finally fix their machine, they go to their customer and explain to him that this garbage has gotten deeply into the system and gummed it up so badly that what could've probably been fixed for $500 before the sealer went into it now needs $2000 to fix. So not only is the repair shop victimized by your $15 repair so is the next guy to own it who would've gladly paid the $500 but cannot afford a $2000 repair that should've never been needed. He declines the repair, so for the less than $100 the shop got for their time to diagnose this car, they dumped ten times that into fixing the equipment that was wrecked so they can fix the next guy who was sensible enough to get it fixed correctly with the proper parts.

That $15 can helped you and screws everyone else. Thats why there are a lot of shops that just refuse to do AC work. Why invest so much money into tools just so some guy who went to Wal-Mart or Advance Auto Parts can turn around and screw you out of your livelihood? Its probably the biggest reason why I won't do it.

I would love to see the day where every last leak sealer product is banned from being sold and goes into a dumpster where it belongs. The way you fix a leak is with parts, plain and simple. It would be ironic if after filling that dumpster it springs a leak.

So that is why the sealer hate.

Well thanks for fixing my highjack and for explanation. I had no idea. Sometimes a little hate is a good thing. My car won't be spreading any of it thou, I would never sell it and just redid it inside and out.

I guess I just lucked out and hope everyone will heed the advice to properly track down a leak.
