Should Vacuum Get All Moisture Out of Dryer? Sign In

I have a 1978 Lincoln Mark V with the factory ac system (460 engine).

All the R-12 coolant leaked out and the system was exposed to the atmosphere some years ago. The hoses are now replaced and the system is tight again, but is still filled with air.

If the proper vacuum is applied for the proper length of time, should that remove all moisture from the dryer?

If not, can I get out the moisture form the dryer by putting it into an oven? I believe the drier is filled with desicant crystals and I remember from when I used to buy camera equipment that it came with bags of desicant and the instructions said the moisture could be removed from that desicant by putting it in an over and so I don't see why the same procedure can't be done with the Lincoln ac system's dryer in the event that a vacuum cannot get out the moisture.

Thanks very much for any advice.

No, you don't want to do that. Those chips are contained in a cloth bag. If that bag tears all those pieces will spread through the system and destroy everything. You need t replace that dryer. No other option.

So, should I take that to mean that applying vacuum is not going to get out the moisture and therefore I should buy a new dryer (Autozone has them supposedly)?

If I don't replace the dryer that has been exposed to the atmosphere, but just charge the ac system, is it likely the ac will at least blow cold assuming there are no other problems?

If you don't want to destroy your whole system, CHANGE THE DRYER.

This is ridiculous over a $20 dryer.

Dryer is about $70 at Autozone. If you know where I can get one for about $20, please let me know and by all means I'll get it.

Right here www.rockauto.com $19.43

They even have another one for $5.58 but I'd pass on that one.

Replace it! Cost isn't even a factor vs potential damage. Consensus is you can't "vacuum" boil out moisture from desiccant, heat may but problem is it breaking up as HT said wrecking the job,
