2000 Jeep Cherokee, 118000 miles, IL-6 Engine. Recently, my temp. gauge has stopped working correctly. It hardly moves past the first line, even after the engine is warm and has been driven for awile. Occasionally it will shoot up to the normal temp reading, and then drop back to the first tick after a few minutes. Could this be the thermostat or is there a sending unit for the gauge that is malfunctioning? Thanks for any help you can give.

My guess is it's reading properly and the thermostat isn't shutting tightly - new one called for. You should be able to feel the heater air as a sample of what the engine temp is unless it was boiling then vapor doesn't throw heat. It would shoot up to close to a normal reading like if you slowed down after a run or right after start up when warm for a second. Classic for a faulty thermostat. It will really help if you tend to this at once as if it really is running cool you are wasting gas and stressing the emission controls, T
