I have a 2008 Ford Escape XLT with 112,000 miles and manual A/C controls. When the air conditioner or heater is used, I am unable to direct the air to the defrost or floor vents on any fan speed. No matter what button is pushed, air is directed to the dash vents only. The fan and temperature control dials work properly.

Mode selection is done through an electronic actuator/motor mounted on the left side of the HVAC housing. The linkage could be jammed, actuator could be bad or the control head could not be sending the correct commands. It needs to be checked out closed. Someone with a bidirectional, professional scan tool may be able to access the module and see if there are any codes and try commanding it from the scanner.

The mode doors, which control were the air is discharged, is operated by an electronic servo. Do you hear any noises, such as clicking, when your trying to change positions?

Edit: HT beat me to it.Shocked

Thanks for the info. I do not hear any clicks or other noises. From the "system off" position a push of any button will send air to the dash vents. From the "system on" position pushing a button doesn't change the sound or amount of air coming from the dash vents.

Well, HT's pic shows the actuator. You should do a visual inspection by looking up underneath the dash. See if the cam moves while someone is switching modes. If it doesn't move, you need to get the controller scanned and to monitor door position, as HT pointed out.
