Unknown A/C system that does not work, how do I proceed to assess it and get it cold?

The truck describe below had an engine swap from a V6 to a 5.7L TBI. I am not sure if the A/C equipment is original.

First thing is to make sure that the ac system is put together. Is it all together?

It appears to be altogether, I'm no expert but I did take AC at local community college.....in the eighties.

Can you spin the front of the compressor by hand?

The A/C system has no pressure at all, a previous owner was a jackleg hack, everything, all systems were crapped around with. Lose or missing bolts, screws, nuts and missing or wrong parts everywhere. Steering, and suspension, electrical, body panels, brakes, I had to touch every part on this truck but now it's good.

What A/C parts can be bench tested and which are "Don't Risk it Get New"?

No pressure at all of course it won't work. A/C is tough stuff guy. First you find the primary leak with the system intact. This is where it gets expensive as all get out. The legal route would be R-22 (just a little) with nitrogen gas, get pressure and do all the tests to find it, sniffers, bubbles or you might hear it! You need to get that stuff out too!

Is the vehicle still R-12 or has it been converted or do you know?

It's not funny but this could get real costly but try to know why and where it's empty now.

PS: Just look at compressor and see if it's all oily. Not good news for the thing if so. The radial - looks like a brake booster shape was NOT a dependable compressor. If going for A/C have the bucks, buy new stuff..............

Not sure what you mean by bench testing.

Make sure you can spin the front of the compressor by hand. Remove the compressor and see how much oil in it. If the compressor is all oily around the housing, it is probably leaking and will need to be replaced with a new compressor. Remove the orifice tube and inspect the screen for debris. Replace the orifice tube. Install a new accumulator. Let us know how much oil is in the compressor. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to flush the other components out using an approved ac flush. Don't flush the compressor. Don't know if this thing has been retrofitted, so you may need to do that.

Let us know what you find out so you can start putting it back together. When you get to that point, we can let you know how much oil the system holds, what other procedures need to be done before charging the system back up, and getting it operational.

John - we are here to help you and post by DS (we nickname people sometimes) is spot on, A/C might be wildly expensive, can be totally frustrating and worse is doing things wrong just makes it cost more plus you can waste already "done" stuff.

Some good news is you can rent for free some things to attack it. No small beans guy. This is tough stuff many times. Be warned,

Tom

That would hurt like hell. Do know how tall some of the coconut trees can get?

Re: Unknown A/C System Don't Work, How Do I Assess it and Get it Cold? Sign In

I can turn the compressor by hand, also I suspect that the system was discharged during the engine swap.

Can I evacuated the system to see if it has a leak?

Can I use a different type of compressor being that the type I have is undependable.

No, the truck is not worth it but I am. I had a series of lapses in judgment with this truck and now I cannot get rid of it unless I give it to someone for a gift. It's a project truck that has a very good engine, steering/suspensions, brakes and more. Other than the price of gas times V8 I wouldn't think twice about driving it cross country.

The first step is to get and evacuate and recharge done and then see what you have.

Re: Unknown A/C System Don't Work, How Do I Assess it and Get it Cold? Sign In

Sorry for the interruption John Doe.

Yes as Hammer said if the system is at least intact charge it to specified amount of refrigerant. If a sticker still on the thing go by that or if now 134a rough guess is 70 to 80%.

If nothing known with this critter you can still do it just pay lots of attention.

Evac pump and gauges I'm told are available at Autozone and probably places like that for free for full deposit. Stuff gets pricey and A/C isn't forgiving but you need to know what you are starting with. If it won't hold a vacuum it will be more involved up to OMG expensive!
