ac compressor clutch wiring Sign In

Need help with a '98 escort. The ac clutch will not engage as it should.
The problem appears to be in the wiring to the compressor; there are only two wires, one of them has good continuity to ground, the "blue-with-white-stripe" wire doesn't have any voltage. I think the wire may be broken or corroded causing an open circuit.

Does anyone know where this wire (blue with white) comes from, before it reaches the compressor? My Haynes manual does not show this in the wiring diagrams.

Additional information:
The low pressure switch appears to be OK and has voltage, the fuse under the dash panel is good, the dashboard switch is good, I checked the under hood fuses/relays and didn't find one that was bad. Both the evaporator/radiator and blower fans works fine. The system appears to be fully charged; 70 psi when off.
I hooked up jumper wires from the battery to the ac compressor an dthe system functioned perfectly; cold air, and 30 psi on the low side.
I don't have a high pressure guage, but I believe the high pressure switch is good because the evap fan turns on if yiu pull the plug off the switch (and also since the system funtioned fine with jumper wires hooked up).

So again, I need help tracing the wiring back from the compressor, since I lose it in the wiring harness behind the headlight

70 psi (static pressure) is too low unless it's cold out! Your out puts sounds fine and other pressures. While compressor is on check at least the low side pressure which will cut out below about 30 psi - which may indicate you need a boost. Be careful there! Too much is NOT a good thing!!!!! Tom

Thanks Tom, I'll recheck it when I get the compressor turning on on it's own. Any thoughts on the wiring or where I can find a "complete" wiring diagram?

Unless this car is a fixed wreck most locations of fuses and relays are in the owner's manual.Wiring simply goes thru a fuse to a relay - then on to low pressure switch and then on to compressor. Low or high pressures will cut it out! Best, Tom
