ac trouble dodge caravan Sign In

Hi I have a 99 dodge caravan base model. I purchased it in the winter and had no need to use the AC. when i bought it my Father in law replaced all the belts including the AC. I live in Fl and it's hot now went to put the AC on and the compressor isn't working. Upon investigating I saw that the AC belt was no longer on there. What would cause the belt to fall off? I am going to get down and dirty over the weekend, but was wondering if anyone could me some areas I should check, like pulleys and that sort of thing. I have been working on my own cars since I was 18 and I can pretty much figure it all out, but when it comes to AC I am a girl...LOL any advice or help you can give me would be greatly apprecitated as I don't have the money to put it in the shop. THANKS...Crystal

Sounds like the compressor may have seized up.

This is not a DIY type job. It's can be dangerous and harmful to the car to make mistakes. I suggest you have it checked out by a reputable shop.

Re: ac trouble dodge caravan Sign In

This suggest a separate belt not altering the way the car runs. If still off you can get a clue by turning outer plate of compressor which will/should turn with some resistance and the main pull of compressor should plain spin quiet and free.

Hopefully you'll get lucky and it's just some stupid like the belt wasn't on properly and a pro should be able to have a good clue. As HT said this isn't average DIY work or more harm can come. Check that any pulley in that belt system except the source one spins which won't by hand and shouldn't - silently with no free-play !! Engine off and cool, keys out!

Re: ac trouble dodge caravan Sign In

thanks guys....i'll check to see that the pulleys are spining and I'll grab another belt and put it on and see if that makes a difference. got to do the brakes this weekend so I'll just add this to my list. and I will bring it to a shop for anything other than needing a belt, just because you know how doesn't mean you should, right.
Thank you again!

Re: ac trouble dodge caravan Sign In

Don't even waste a new belt if compressor is seized or if another pulley found bad is fixed,
