howdy am in the process of replacing clutch. waiting on getting one in. mechanical failure is causing it to rub pulley/make friction. so i removed it. pulley & belt fine. compressor not locked up. pulley still has the snap ring, so i'm wondering if the clutch is mandatory for operation of engine? can or will the pulley come off without the clutch (and bolt) in place? thx

If the pulley is still there and in good shape you can drive it but I would suspect the pulley is the part causing the issues from wear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

? Yes, no and maybe? Yes to just leaving it as a pulley and or look for a dummy compressor's pulleys. IDK how available. Risk: If compressor isn't operational electric fans might not work so do make sure it/they do work they cool the engine you don't need A/C but don't let it overheat. I plead IDK except for the pulley (yes you can) on the fan(s) working - make sure, Tom

it was a mechanical failure on the clutch. it broke a weld and the plate that moves is loose. everything else is fine. car will run fine. my Q is can the pulley come off with its snap ring in place? are there forces that would make the pulley move off the shaft? Hard to find just a clutch - its expensive esp. compared to a clutch assembly (includes the pully/coil) or an entire compressor (which there's no reason for me to complicate things since it works fine). Going to a pull-a-part place on Tue. so this is just temporary to go to/from work.

The snap ring is the only thing that ever holds the pulley on. Just make sure the pulley doesn't rock back and forth and make sure the compressor is not seized before putting the new clutch on.The clutch consists of 3 pieces and they should all be changed together. The clutch plate also has to be shimmed for the correct clearance to the pulley.
