car Radiator Over-Heating Sign In

Hi,

My Radiator is starting to overheat. I noticed I have a leak on the return hose going from the engine to the Radiator. It drips very little. I'm in the process of waiting to get the Radiator since the hose attachment is whats causing the leak. Since it's cracked.

I wanted to know if the heating system is run by pressure or just temp? Would the thermostat still open and close with a leak in the system or would it just just stay open? I'm assuming it works on temperture, so it would open and close... but if that was the case why would the car be starting to overheat.

Any ideas.

Also running the heat on high keeps the temp even. Also driving at high speeds also keeps the car temp at even.

Hi Friend,

The radiator may be fixable but replacements new are best. If you have an old fashoned all metal radiator fixing it will be cost effective if it's basically ok. Also in you have the old type radiator cap - cut a wedge (like a pie slice) in the smaller gasket and you then should have a zero pressure system which won't pump out more coolant till you take care of this. It just buys some time and you will need a new cap.

Stange - but if heater quits blowing hot you are no doubt low on coolant. Check for pressure in system before adding, radiator first Go slow, engine running, then recovery tank depending the vehicle. Again depending on the vehicle you risk head gaskets, the whole head! and sludge from overheated oil. Use good judgment - adding coolant or even just water can blow back in your face if things haven't cooled down at bit. T
