01 pontiac grand am 4.3 the car over heats sometimes. i replaced the thermostat. it help a little. when the engine is cold you start the car and the car over heats. if you have the heater on there is no heat coming out of the heater. the anti-freeze comes out of the radiator cap. if you turn off the car and turn it back on the heat comes out of the heater and the cars temp is around 200 deg.

Paul; Assuming the belt is in place and the water pump is okay;
You could have an air pocket in the system. Hopefully not, but you may have a head gasket leaking hot exhaust gasses into the cooling system which will 'super heat' the coolant quickly. Is it at all possible that you put the thermostat in backwards? It is fairly simple to test for a leaking head gasket. There is a chemical called Block Check that is available at most part stores. It is a blue liquid that changes to yellow if exhaust gasses are present. Another way is with a gas analyzer that most shops have that you can 'sniff' the radiator or coolant recovery bottle for exhaust gasses. Good luck.
