Re: gasoline smell from heater Sign In

There isn't much chance of raw gasoline getting into cooling system which is making heat for heater BUT:

Heat requests are usually drawing air from outdoors and any leaks COULD make an odor - even strong. You also need to know tailpipe is clear and exhaust system is good.

Just a little fuel can make quite the odor so any leaks at engine, lines, fuel filter, filler neck + cap, tank can make the odor. Most engine compartments are NOT 100% tight from odors managing to enter vehicle but close. Air generally enters at the base of wipers and in certain conditions wherever the source it can get there be it wind or whatever.

More: In very cold temps from a cold start the injectors are putting out extra fuel but should be only a short relative time and excess if any out the tailpipe.

If sprays or whatevers are being used to clear ice especially from windshield make sure any odor from that isn't fooling you. Most of those are alcohols or some use some glycol which really neither really smell like gasoline.

Way out there! Anyone put gas into window wash fluid?

No matter what and if help needed find this as it's not normal and of course could be dangerous,

T

This is usually due to a fuel leak in the engine area and the fumes are being picked up by the fresh air intake for the air conditioner. You will have to inspect for leaks with the engine running as they will evaporate very quickly and your only going to see a small wet area.

I have had customers in the past with the same complaint on these models. They usually mistake a oil leak smell for fuel smell. The back valve cover will leak and it is close to the fresh air intake for the A/C-heating system. When you turn the heater on I believe these models revert to outside are automatically regardless of the setting.
