1972 Power Steering not pumping Sign In

I am having issues with a power steering pump on a Pontiac 400 engine. The pump was leaking and I don't know the age of the pump or last time it was serviced. I decided to replace the seals and rings in the pump.

It dissembled fairly easy and I replaced the rings with a kit from a auto parts store.

The pump has little metal splines and tried my best to put it back together the way it came apart. I got it back mounted to the car with a new belt. I filled up the reservoir but it does not seem to be helping steer the car. The pulley was moving well but I don't think the fluid was pumping.

Is there a special assembly of splines or possibly bleeding that may need to be done?

I think many GMs used same whole pump assembly, metal tanks not meant to be pryed on were and was the biggest problem. Whole used was fast and easy THEN but now this old could be trouble for a good whole unit.

Pump itself is still available w tank for about $50 so just need to swap the pulley. I wouldn't bother messing with repairing existing one on this especially unless no other choices easy.

No cap so need your old one on this. Good time to do the hoses too.

Bleeding out was just filling reservoir and steering fully left and right. Front wheels hoisted was better, no load till finished.

What model? That was a look up for a Lemans but may fit many as said.

If run dry too long you may have damaged the steering gearbox?

Thanks for the reply. Buying a new pump may be the way to go. I figured for $10 i would give new seals a shot.

They car is a 68 GTO but the engine is from a 72.

When I got the car the high pressure line was busted and would spew fluid if trying to put any in. I replaced the lines and the power steering worked just fine other than the leaking from the pump. Since the power steering was working I wanted to try and swap the seals.

I lifted the front of the car today, will let it set over night and look at it again tomorrow.

Good luck. Just do watch for leaks anyway all the time for assorted things. PS can wreck the steering box if debris or run dry which is more of a problem than the pump and hoses, -- T
