2006 chev colorado

This might be a stupid ? but is the steering wheel supposed to lock with the key out on this vehicle? Wife's truck and I haven't driven it in 4 or 5 years and today I noticed it doesn't lock. Can't remember if it did or not. No other problems with key/ignition/steering, TIA.

Your vehicle should have Passlock and shift interlock if automatic.

No pass lock just a blank cut key works. No steering lock on the automatic sure surprises me. 1st 80s+ gm I've owned that did that. When I drove it this morn and then parked it, I took the key out I have a habit of turning the wheel till it locks. I must have turned the wheel both ways full 120 degrees and thought it must be broke. I usually drive an older 90s gm.

How does the passlock system work without a programmed key? I guess on the dash there should be a security light right? Need to look next time, I've never noticed it.

VEHICLE THEFT DETERRENT (VTD) SYSTEM
The Passlock(TM) system is provided in order to prevent vehicle theft if the ignition lock cylinder is forced to rotate. The Passlock(TM) controller reads the coded Passlock(TM) data signal. The data consists of a voltage generated by a voltage divider network created between the Passlock(TM) assembly and the Passlock(TM) controller. If the data is correct , indicating rotation of the lock cylinder with the proper mechanically cut key, then the Passlock(TM) controller sends a password to the powertrain controller via serial data to indicate that fuel should be delivered to the engine. The Passlock(TM) controller also interfaces with the driver displays subsystem to indicate, via a security telltale, the Passlock(TM) subsystem status and acute subsystem failures.
The components of the Passlock(TM) system are as follows:
- The ignition switch
- The body control module (BCM)
- The security indicator on the instrument cluster
- The engine control module (ECM)
