2012 Chevy Equinox mystery rattling noise going over bumps and constant at 55mph+ Sign In

Greetings and alas,

Short Story:
I am here in search of help from the internet because i am $2K+ deep in trying to figure out this strange rattling noise coming from the REAR LEFT wheel area when going over bumps or cracks in the road as well as it becoming a constant rattle once i reach 55mph on the highway (happens everytime) and it also silences when i step on the break for a couple of seconds then continues. The mechanic pointed out the rear left tire has extra wear on the inside most part of the tread. Could it be the tires?

Things replaced by the mechanic:
-rear shocks both sides
-exhaust passed the catalytic and mounts replaced
-Stabilizer links both sides
-Sway bar links and bushings both sides

Each time I checked with the mechanic when the car was on the lift and everything is solid and tight (and rusty lol will fix later). Even the mechanic is stumped at this point...

I am going to drop the car off again tomorrow to hopefully figure something out, any ideas would be amazing.

Long Story(extra details):
About 3 months ago I was in a small accident; 3 lane highway. im in the left lane going to the middle half way into changing the lane the car in the right lane decided to change into the middle lane as i was and was not looking. My reaction was to change back to my original lane since i am still halfway in the middle and left lane and the lady riding my ass was trying to get passed me and we had a pretty strange collision it was more of the back corner panel/partial wheel area rubbed against here car until we came to a stop.

I did not have any problems after that accident with the car driving except for what sounded like a loud wheel bearing but i had it checked and was told it was fine. Then a month later I had this rattle noise become more and more apparent so i brought the car in.

**forgot to mention in terms of driving and handling it drives like normal only this noise has been annoying the crap out of me because it sounds like the car is going to fall apart on the highway lol**

I can't understand why your mechanic is stumped. I knew what it was before finishing your first paragraph.
As soon as you stated it went away when stepping on the brake.

You have a problem with one or both of the calipers. Either the hold down bolts are loose or the slide bushing are worn out. The caliper is rattling around because it's loose.

Mike - I couldn't agree more with HT's observation and cause.
Know calipers on (most all now) suspended on pins with rubber also slide to operate. Pads are attached to that design is not to rattle you totally nuts are lose until you apply brake.
It could and would elude notice because it doesn't have to seem like any brake problem it still stops as intended?
Check would be that wheel off with hands probably get it to move see the exact issue that may have been removed and put back on a few times something went wrong to deal with other things like that mishap/accident.
Rusty mechanical on vehicles. Do check all items that really matter for integrity of the vehicle.
That if you are keeping this for it's useful life perhaps a body shop savvy to rust at some point make the call to invest in another few years (?) of fixes or change out for another vehicle. It wins - we lose, that nasty game is as old as the hills,

This seems to make a lot of sense! I just dropped off the car at the mech and will ask him to inspect the calipers again.

I asked to inspect everything back there and he told me the brakes have a bit of left on the rear brakes.

Everything is driving and braking as intended.

Thank you for the quick responses guys, much appreciated.

Will hopefully have a solution today.

Well...

Looks like it was none of the suggested.

Instead... A much bigger problem.

The undercarriage is fairly rusted but specifically a steel bracket that supports one of the control arm points to the floor completely rusted out and was hanging causing the sound.

Unfortunately need to spend way more than expected but at least figured out the issue.

Thanks for the replies and have a good weekend!

Uggh. Rust that bad to totally leave strong metal junk at 10ish years old it's time to think/decide what to do. Costly for sure needs full analysis why so much somewhat too soon.
An old repair for some reason on one side if the other side looks lots better may have sped it up.
Glad you know - that's important.
If that is all thru the underside hate to say without some serious help + metal fabrication other problems if not a disaster are possible.
If you continue to keep this it wins fixed isn't as tolerant as most original could be fast to return.
It's become a hard to find trade around me must have the right person, with equipment and know what other parts/things around the area unharmed.
You may just know RUST all over is just too much work to be worth it!
Good luck rust is severe where I am is probably the most common reason to give up so beware and wise not to overspend what you see is usually much worse hidden so make the right choice it's a rock and hard place,

How on earth did they not see this very obvious issue.
