I bought a 96 town car, but the steering is like there is no power steering. Its not to bad if your moving, but very hard if sitting still. I see the steering sensitivity switch on the dash, but it doesn't do anything. I have heard it may be tied in with my air ride, which has a problem, I get the warning light check air suspension after a few minutes after starting car. The power steering pump is not making noise and the fluid is full. So what should I check ?

Taken from service manual. The Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) system is designed to vary the flow from the power steering pump based on vehicle speed and the rate of steering wheel rotation. The system provides full assist at low speed for light parking effort and minimum assist at high speed for good road feel and directional stability. In the event of system failure, full assist is provided. You may have a pump issue but someone is going to have to do some pressure testing.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Most of the time if there is some type of electrical failure for the EVO, the steering will go full assist. That means if you unplug the evo actuator, you should have full assist. If not, you have some other problem in the hydraulics of the steering system and would need to check pressures as HT stated. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Quote: ">>I get the warning light check air suspension after a few minutes after starting car.<<" Just this part of your post: Not sure year by year exactly how each could be. Ones I knew had just air springs no metal back up springs for rear. Yes, for ride and ability to self level for loads I think just for the rear. A problem is the bag that is holding the car up requires an air pump I think is under something under hood left front. If it fails to hold air it's trouble. Car could go so low you couldn't roll a golf ball under the rear! May be leaking or just not telling it to level out. Check those air spring bags first. Maybe and only heard of maybe there was a way (kit) to put real coil springs where the air springs were if you can do without that feature. Can't verify that kit or if it worked well. It is a potential real problem if they go flat for any reason. OE should have a switch in trunk to turn the feature off for just when hoisting the car and if anyone shut it off I recall a light did warn you so it might be just that. Sorry to be so vague on that. I doubt suspension and steering issue are related, T

The brains of the air suspension system is also the brains of the variable assist steering. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Now I know. Remarkably few came my way except for limos which are a different bird entirely. Truck rear end suspension. I would not work on them at my location as they didn't fit - smile. One came in with flat springs and owner was just ticked off at the car and think bought another so never got into it? Tom

Remove the pump belt and see if you can pull the pulley out of the pump. Seen many pump shafts break and the pulley will be held in place by the belt. Dan. Canadian "EH"
