Long post.
I drive my crv in the winter only.
So a month ago I went to drive it after it sat for the summer and it was running bad and I knew from last year it needed front end work.
Replaced the fuel injectors, struts, outer tie rods, sway bar links.
Went to drive it and now I'm getting this shaking around 20+ mph, it's a rhythmic shaking I feel mostly under my butt, and side to side feeling that's fairly violent. It only occurs when I'm hitting the gas or maintaining speed, as soon as I let off the gas the shaking stops.
Took to tire store and they said the tires aren't the culprit.
Back to the mechanic and he advised it was the u joints throwing the driveshaft out of balance. He confirmed the u joints were wasted. He took them out and then said they dont make u joints for it and I would need to replace the drive shaft, 1000 dollars. I declined and he left the drive shaft out, now the car is FWD only.
However, the car continues to shake even without the drive shaft. The harder I accelerate the more violent the shake.
Mechanic cant figure it out, suspension is tight.

Need some ideas?

I'm betting that when they replaced the struts they pulled the inner C/V joint apart and damaged it.

Even if they didn't damage it, it could still be binding and cause those issues.

Is their anyway I can check that visibly without taking it to the shop or removing the actual axle?

If you get both front wheel off the ground and put it in gear you may be able to see some jumping of the tire and/or axle.

This method is not foolproof. You don't have any pressure on the axle when doing it this way so the binding may not show up but if the joint has actually come apart, that should show up.

It doesn't really sound like this guy knows what he is doing because the vibration harmonics of a driveshaft and a C/V axle are quite different and noticeable.

I just got up under there and took a peek, car still on the ground. I didnt notice any obvious damage, the boots are still intact anyway

That doesn't mean anything. The plunge joint can be pulled apart without damaging the boot.

Thanks for your advice, I feel you may be on to something, I dont recall any shaking until they did the struts, if there wasn't 6 inches of fresh snow I would jack the car up.
If it's a bad axle its gonna be hard getting the shop to admit they cause the problem. I dont wanna shell out thousands of dollars to fix it smh.

You should be able to get an axle replaced for under $300. You can buy the axle for under $75

Correct! I called midas for a quote and they said 275 out the door. So I guess I'm gonna take it up there and have them look at it. I dont really wanna take it back to the guy that did the struts cuz I really doubt he will own up to it, plus I'm sorta pissed he took my driveshaft out without first confirming he could find new u joints, autozone sells a driveshaft for around 400 bucks.

I'll bet those u-joints are readily available too.

What is the year and engine size?

I just did a little research and from what I read the u joints are "staked" whatever that means, and most shops reccomend replacing the shaft. I also saw that specialty shops can replace them

Most all u-joints are staked. It's not a big deal. Yours are already removed from the shaft anyway from what I understand.
The whole shaft is cheap enough so it's not worth changing the joints. I would just replace the whole shaft.

UPDATE
Took the car to Midas today and asked them to check the front axles. He called a few hours later and sure enough he said the passenger side axle was wasted. He said it was visibly hoping when the tire was spun on the lift and the problem was under the boot, the shaft itself wasnt bent. I had him replace the axle and the car is driving smoothly again, total cost with an alignment was 300 bucks.
I just wanted to say thanks for all your help, I really appreciate you.
