Dangerous steering problem!! Sign In

I'm dealing with a 2003 Nissan Altima 3.5 v6 that just rolled over to 100 thousand miles. the problem is while driving straight down the road at 40 miles an hour the vehicle just dives off to the right without warning. It scared the snot out of me at just under 70. It feels like steering with a big area of play in the steering wheel at that very instant but its easily steered back under control and does it every time you apply the brakes. It doesn't pull to the right . It dives or falls off to the right. Sorry for the long winded post, help!CrazyOh111 One last thing, when the car suddenly dives off to the right the steering wheel is "NOT" jerked out of my hands, it feels disconnected. Again thanks for all your help!!

? This will be a check everything suggestion to do with all front end parts, brakes, tires, wheels and suspension parts. You've put out some clues with large area of free-play (find where or what with a helper as needed) to pulling quits with braking.
Basics of course like tire pressure proper by real checking (it's possible TPMS) is in-op if equipped and evenly worn.
History matter if this just happened all at once what prompted it if anything? One super low tire (psi) could do all that or seriously worn part perhaps some impact of road defect of debris on my mind last few strange issues were just that so on my mind.
Make yourself a check list and start ruling stuff out and things you aren't sure of a lot of things can cause this type erratic behavior that isn't good of course it's time to find it now as it is dangerous as your subject line says,

Do what Tom advised concerning checking all the parts in the steering and suspension. Do not overlook the mountings of the rack and pinion. Make sure the rack is not sliding side to side.

Something has to be very loose for this to happen.
