Outer CV Dust seal issues

I have a 2000 Chevy Tracker, 4wd, 2.0 liter, approx. 157K miles. I just replaced the driver's side outer CV and replaced the boot on the passenger side. I had pulled the right outer CV from the differential, then discovered split replacement boots......grrr. So, I put it all together. However, The dust seal will not fully seat against the differential like it should. I tried turn and push, twist and push, just pushing,...nothing seems to work. My Haynes repair manual is not very thorough on this section. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

About the split replacement boots only for the moment: They stink and are not really permanent IMO. Whole rebuild shafts are really the way to go not that you can't but just doing one CV joint doesn't save by my experience.
Not sure but you may have to start over,

I don't know why anybody would even attempt to replace a boot or joint these days. The entire axle can be bought for $50 to $60. Nobody does that any more and split boots are definitely out as Tom said.

I haven't even seen one in ages! As HT just said they are history. Way back some CV joints ONE cost $400 bucks so you fought with those one by one and usually was just one. Not any more even for just boots whole is cheaper and fast,

I understand what you are saying and that is what I would do, however I have a exceedingly tight budget. I can't get the new CV until next week, so I just need it to last until then. Hence the split boot and no new right side CV. I need to get to work this week so I CAN get a new CV next weekend. I just was hoping for some insight as to why the dust seal won't marry back up to the differential.

You probably don't have the axle seated fully.

Split boots is like wearing a split condom...LOL
