Power steering not working correctly after refitting power steering pump

While replacing the water outlet on my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4L last weekend, we unbolted the power steering pump to get better access to the water outlet. The pump is driven with a shaft so no belts were involved, and no hoses were removed from the pump. We just unbolted it and moved it out of the way, then bolted it back up.
After replacing the pump, we have some issues with the power steering. The pump has plenty of fluid, but the farther you turn the steering wheel at low speeds, the more difficult it becomes to turn and begins to feel like the power steering isn't working. There don't seem to be any issues with higher speeds and more shallow turns, but trying to turn 90 degrees into a head-in parking spot is a real problem.
We're planning to unbolt and refit the pump this afternoon, and I wanted to ask here first, can anyone suggest anything in particular we should be looking for?

You just removed and reinstalled the same pump correct? Are the hoses twisted up that come from the pump? Did any fluid escape while it was off? Maybe taking the pump off and inspecting the shaft is a good idea

Thanks, Discretesignals. Correct, same pump. Just removed the bolts, pulled it out of the way for awhile, then bolted it back up. No fluid escaped, but this system has always had a slow leak and the fluid level was very low when we did this. I topped off the fluid when I discovered the steering problem, but it didn't help.
The only visible hose isn't twisted or kinked that I can see, but we'll check the hoses and shaft when we get it off after while. I wouldn't have thought it would fit back on the car if the shaft wasn't properly mated with whatever drives it, but I guess we'll see.
