Should I atempt it myself	Sign In

2000 buick le sabre limited 3.8 V6. Needs Rack and pinion, CV boots and head gasket. I have limited funds and am an untrained back yard do-it-yourselfer. Should I try any of these fixes myself or let the pros do it.
Estimates are 1500$ for head gasket. 1600$ for rack and pinion and 300$ for CV boots. Thanks

With that I'd say no on these repairs. Rack ends up with an alignment not known if that was included in your quote. Head gasket jobs you can't know the extent till heads are sent out if it will need more or find some horror when there.

CV boots you don't do just boots you get whole rebuilt 1/2 shafts already with new boots some much less than $100 ea. exchanging your old ones. That too isn't really DIY without a strong understanding,

Kind of odd to see a 3.8L with head gasket issues. Was this thing majorly overheated? It might be a lot more than just a couple of head gaskets. How many miles? If you have limited funds, you are really gambling your money on this vehicle if you never heard it run and/or have driven it to see if it even worth fixing. You could probably get a vehicle that runs, drives, and has a lot less issues cheaper than the money your going to put into that crapper.

Thanks, it looked a bit out of my depth when I watched it on YouTube. I learned my lesson after a failed engine replacement. The mechanic said he would do it for 400$ but with all the parts and the new engine in the bed of my truck it was 1000$ I gladly paid it.
