Steering Sign In

The car is a 1998 Lincoln towncar , 100157 thousand miles .The steering wheel doesn't return when I'm making a left or right turn I have to pull it back to straighten the car . There are no leaks or noises fluids are full, a repair shop said it may be the power steering pump or the steering box can you tell me witch one it is so I don't fix one and it's the other . Thank you jim

If correct this is a traditional front end layout common to most RWD only large vehicles for the model year.


So - The first question is what brought this on? This car's alignment's caster setting is highly responsible to returning wheel to close to straight ahead after a turn.


What can fail is terribly worn parts or binding ones. Never heard of PS doing this. This car show many greasable front end parts and if ones that were sealed were replaced the replacements almost always have a grease fitting. Ignore those the can seize up.
If you haven't regularly made sure they are done they are bad and greasing them now won't repair them.


There are also upper and lower control arm with non serviceable bushings so basically you need a full front end parts check and alignment in spec IMO before blaming PS anything.


Work if recent that if done wrong and cause this would be adjusting steering box not needed or if it was thought to it wore for another reason at those miles and would be junk.
If control arms had to be removed for any reason and not aligned then that would do this.


IDK - and IMO very unlikely to do with PS or gearbox and more to do with alignment and or frozen joints if nothing was tended to along the way.


It would need an alignment with almost whatever found and most shops that do real alignment also do the parts involved so that's what you should do,
