Long story short: I'm a complete noob at car repair. I want to diagnose and possibly fix my own car by browsing youtube videos and forums like this. My problem is I have absolutely no vocabulary around the subject. What would you call the "wheel area" that is made up of the control arms, ball joints, etc. etc.? My goal is to find a diagram of the area and systematically search for "how to diagnose a problem with X". Thanks for any tips ;)

So is that a pretty normal service that you could ask for at a mechanic? I will have to get an alignment after the work is complete (if I get that far). Maybe i will ask for them to check it out.

You really should being you have no experience doing suspension work. When you have your alignment performed, explain to the alignment tech that you did your own repair and to just eyeball your work. The tech is supposed to check the suspension and steering components before performing the alignment anyway, but giving him/her a heads up would be a good idea. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

If you just want a word to call an area where parts close to wheels are I could call the area a "wheel well" no doubt not found in any instructions as you are just supposed to know, T
