99 Malibu 2.4
186,000 miles

The power steering hose on my Mali-Poo just crapped out on me causing all of the fluid to leak out. I found the leak but will not have the money to replace the hose until next week. Obviously the car still drives, just a pain to steer. My questions is, will I cause damage by driving this week with no power steering? I would hate to have to replace the entire rack and pinion because of a hose. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

You certainly will. You will ruin the pump in real short order. If you can't fix it, don't drive it.

Yep, this is bad to drive. That fluid lubricates the pump. If you run the engine without fluid in it, the pump will be ruined. It will throw off the serpentine belt and you won't have a water pump turning so the engine will overheat and get wrecked. If it gets shut off quickly enough you would merely be stranded on the side of the road, and you would need a new pump and a tow truck, both of which are more expensive than the hose you need.
