A friend says "don't buy an all wheel drive" he said if you replace one component ie. bearing ,tire ,brakes ,you have to do them all ,you can not mis match . How much truth ,if any , is there in what he said .

I agree with your friend on this one. Good tires on the two wheels that drive especially and always good tires are the game. Too many AWD vehicles IMO out there for those that don't or couldn't need it.
If working with a vehicle in very serious driving conditions I'd sooner have 4WD on request not AWD - personal choice. It's true many AWDs tires need to be the same and same amount of wear or will confuse the whole car/vehicle,

Brakes should be done in pairs AWD or not. Assuming you mean hub bearings? Those can be replaced individually.
Wouldn't be a good idea to mismatch tires on any vehicle that has 4wd, limited slip, or ABS.

All things for any way should be done equally and kept even right to left and front to rear. My problem with automatized AWD is anything that can and will confuse it and odd anything it will like tire wear, even types.
Hey - I'm living in the snow to ice area back and forth and just North tons of hills and more snow. Never had a problem if plain traction to go if tires were top condition.
Braking: Doesn't matter what computer anything does or can do the vehicle can only do as well as traction between rubber and surface - ends the game.
The reason NOT to have it is just more complication of the car for rust area (many are) for things to go wrong.
I could be just me but think folks get a false sense a vehicle can stop, steer and go or do the impossible because of drive type instead of really knowing what the heck they are dealing with for conditions.
Off road trick - do what you have to do,

I got a very basic 02 civic today ,just what I was looking for . I turned something else down with too many features . Here in the no.east over the last many years I've had a few close calls in the snow and ice . The best thing is to keep your head and don't panic ,it's only as safe as the operator . Years ago it was all rear wheel drive and we couldn't wait for it to snow ..

Well said. Don't expect the vehicle or machine to just fix any situation by itself. Some conditions really mean just turn around and go back or home and wait a couple hours.
You mentioned N. East. That's where I am and only different in that tons of vehicles use the same roads such that one gets stuck for any reason it ends the show for that road no matter what you have just avoid those situations totally if you can never mind weather it can be an obstruction of some other kind,
