help steering column Sign In

hey everyone I recently took my steering column and when I went to put it back together the shaft becomes loose and there is a little black piece and a metal piece as well that keep popping out of place as soon as I put any tension on it. there for I can't get the steering wheel back on without it having numerous amounts of place can anyone please help!!!

Year, make, model of vehicle or golf cart?

Can you take a picture of the pieces your mentioning?

oops sorry about that its a 93 Chevy c/k 1500 with a 305 5.0L and 5spd manual tranny and I wish I could but I put it back together the best I could for now and really don't want to take it off again until I get the pros opinions on here.

Not even sure of the pieces your talking about. If you took a pic of those pieces, you might get better help.

If like I think there's a tiny snap ring holding down the black plastic (thing) over the star wheel that locks the wheel. Takes a steering wheel puller tool to depress that for removal, snap ring pliers or two flat head screwdrivers to undo and catch that ring. No holes in it like a snap ring, just a wire loop and can't work without it. Fling and it's gone across the shop and you are screwed if you can't find it the show stops till you get one.


Maybe available in a blister pack of GM steering column stuff that get lost or broken. Ask or look or go used but you still need the tools - not expensive but can't be done without it.


That ring is like a key ring metal, doesn't overlap, just a small gap to spread and remove it. Strong magnet or something when free or can lose this stuff. To install it should just push back down and click in place with the wheel tool depressing down the black thingy (nice word) that it must have,

Dang you are good at pics DS! Yes, IF THAT it's what I mean. Right between fingers in that pic or this mess will not work and can't fake it with something else. FYI - about all real GMs like that for ages older than this........

thanks guys but the piece I'm talking about is lower than that its right below the spring that is under the cam

If the piece you need isn't in that pic it's below that "star" wheel is what I call it. If yours isn't right just go to a pull your own junkyard and hope to find one just setting on the floor or bring your tools. Bet is most are all the same on full size GMs cars and trucks.


Most times I was in there was to put the cancel spring (left and right handed) in for directionals or replace the key cylinder not as much. When putting yours back index a small mark on shaft when wheels are pointing dead ahead then put wheel on in dead ahead position as well.


Tricky crap but not. Never needed to replace a bushing in one even with zillions on miles,

yeah not sure why this piece I'm referring to keeps coming loose then I had to wiggle it back in there but the part I'm referring to is supposed to fit over the shaft so its lined up with the bearings

Memory going I guess but did these all the time for the directional springs when folks got ticked off enough. Found many and kept spares. Where I went a lot were already apart but tools required, puller and thingy tool that pushes down whole plate such that you can take that little right off WITHOUT BUSTING EVERYTHING on hand anyway.
Didn't have the pleasure but it probably could bust and not stay put. If you didn't use that tool that pushes down you did break it so that ends that.


Plain haven't noticed these parts in aftermarket packs yet but might be as those springs were so common lots younger than this is now.


There was a new brand line of Chinese made common junk just recently at an Autozone or places like it. Door handles and odd stuff known common to break.


Check though if junkyarding isn't close or easy for you. Hell - ask, especially NAPA for whacked stuff?

I believe its 35 looks pretty dang close plus there's a metal piece that is on top of it if I had to guess something like a bearing retainer or along those lines
