increase my ground clearance 2 or 3 inches? Sign In

1994 Acura Legend sedan I understand that a Legend is built to run wide and low but I cant afford a more appropriate winter vehicle this year. Crazy

Can anyone tell me a simple and effective way to increase my ground clearance 2 or 3 inches? This is mostly a problem in the front. This winter , I will have to driveon some pretty rough back roads and my Legend sits quite low. It is an older car , with over 90k miles so maybe new springs would do the job . I also wonder about using body or spring spacers. Maybe air shocks? I don't know. Can anybody in this forum give me some direction with this issue? The car has 15'' wheels.Maybe I could use bigger wheels or higher profile tires.

There isn't a whole lot you can do here without dramatically messing with the functionality of the car. You can't change the suspension and you can't use taller tires. You just need to get a different vehicle, not ruin that one.

The manufacture's specified ground clearance is 5 inches on those...wow. Your pretty much driving a snow shovel.

If that car can't handle where you need to drive it you need something else. 5" of snow shouldn't bother it really or wait till roads are plowed which is why they do that. If that's your driveway it's up to you to clear it first or fix defects.

In fairness I do see a lot of broken air dams that sit low and can just snap off on those parking bumper things but that's driver error,

Did somebody already modify this and lower it? That's a very common practice with Acuras although it is a stupid thing to do.

Good point. If this was already altered then whatever was done needs undoing back to original. Door jam should state tire size suggested.

I plead IDK but see some of these cars out there you couldn't roll a golf ball under with tires so short it's stupid. Side roads stink where I am and those couldn't possibly take a common defect in the roads that really does wreck the tire and the wheel sometimes.

Keep in mind alterations will change alignment angles that probably can't be well adjusted out if at all and just chew tires forever,

just looking for a place to get help with my winter driving problem. If I had the funds to buy a Pilot, Element or CRV, I would not bother you folks. I understand that a Legend is a sport luxury car and year round use is expecting a lot. I have been a 'Honda Man' for many years and I have a tendency to consider Honda vehicles to be 'bulletproof'. The car was never lowered but an already low car with 100k miles and 20 years of driving is bound to be sagging. Where I live and drive is undergoing a vast natural gas 'gold rush'. Many, many big trucks and construction vehicles, day in and day out hammering these back roads really chops them up. Maybe, when my gas roalties start 'rolling in' I can buy a more appropriate vehicle to drive.

If it really is setting lower than spec the springs are to blame. For that you may need help to see and measure that it's right. Probably a good alignment place could tell you if all is in spec.

Usually when cars lose it with springs they are not even side to side either so that would be a clue if just that.

I can't fix the roads around me either and it's like an obstacle course driving them as regulars know where the defects are that until there's a hole you can park a smart car in nothing gets fixed - not funny I know.

Not sure what else to suggest vs another vehicle if nothing is really wrong,

Your financial situation doesn't really change our answer. You can't lift the car and another vehicle is about your only solution.

As suggested, your springs may have sagged a little but I wouldn't expect no more than an inch or so, so the benefit of replacing the springs would be minimal.
