I have a 3.9L Dakota standard...
I have noticed that it was becoming very hard to have my indicator show that I was in park. Either it will go into park and show reverse or not go into park at all. Now I've noticed the gear shifter will move rather freely without changing into any gears. If I put the shifter all the way down and back up it will catch sometimes but will not go into park. I tried to adjust the cable but it does not change anything. Could the electronic part of the adjuster on the cable be stripped or something? Thanks!

You probably have some worn out bushings. Have somebody work the shifter back and forth while you inspect the linkage.

Well I took it to a shop yesterday and they told me that the cable is actually fraying pretty bad. I looked once I got it home and didn't see any fraying because the line is covered in a sleeve. I'm not doubting him because what he is saying makes sense I guess I just wish I could see what he saw.
