02 GMC won't shift gears automatically

2002 GMC Sierra automatic 2wd won't shift on its own while accelerating. Everything else works great except that it won't tell itself to shift appropriately. I have to let off the gas to make it shift up. 177k miles on the clock, had a new engine put in but not sure if tranny is original or not. Haven't tried anything yet -- mechanics are telling me I need to spend $1300-1800 to have it rebuilt. Any ideas before I make the leap to a full rebuild or replacement?

my truck is a 03 there was a TSB i think for harsh Sh!t 1-2, 3-4 gear ended up being Solenoid, pressure Control and re-flash PCM and my problem went away.. Your vehicle might be affected under this TSB too. i think its any truck with 4L60E in that era but im not sure
