I have a 1988 for ranger and it's just about to chew up the 2nd starter within the last few months. I crawled under and took a look at the teeth on the flywheel, they seem pretty scared up and I'm almost positive that is the problem. In order to replace that I'm going to have to drop the transmission and replace the flywheel ring gear and clutch all at the same time. I'm the first to admit that my mechanical knowledge is pretty basic. This seems like a pretty big job and I'm a little nervous. I have all the parts and a fresh starter, and a manual for the pickup but any other tips or resources would be a great help. thanks

I would also replace the T.CONVERTER pump seal and the rear main oil seal while you have the trans removed.

Dave - I think they mean a standard trans and real flywheel. I might try shims to increase clearance as it seems starter drive was just getting way too close. Hey - I'm not the one looking at it to decide if the worn ring gear can still last or not. It's been about 100 years since I've even seen a gear replaced and I think you bust off the ring gear, put flywheel in a freezer and heat new ring gear and when the same temp they will stick like welded - probably wrong on that - check on that. Pic below shows a way to adjust starter drive gear to ring gear....with wire and shims to change position not shown, T

Thanks for the tip. I found that they don't make shims for my starter any more but was able to cut and bend another set, worked out great thanks!!
