1989 ford crown vic under a 100,000 miles.. driving down the interstate cruise on 80mph tranny started to slip. limped home about 8 miles found that the detent cable came loose put it back on but still slips. is there some kind of fix, setting for this or did i smoke the transmission

The slipping is a lousy sign. Some of these had a small nylon thing on throttle body that could allow the kickdown cable to come off but then you would have had trouble downshifting first - not a slip. Check fluid color - if dark it's game over. The good news is you probably can find good whole trans for this for a reasonable amount or get it done if the car is good overall, T
