Ok so I have a 93 oldmoble 88 royale that has just over 97000 miles. It has a 3800 motor and all around a really solid car. About 5 years a go it ended up getting a leak in the transmission line that runs pthrew the radiator and ended up getting to the point it wouldn't go anymore so I bought the same exact car color and all just it was a 95 instead of a 93 and just parked the 93 for the next 2 years. Then ended up looking at the 93 one day with my grandpa who knew a little bit about cars and we eneded up replacing the radiator and flushing the transmission and the car started moving but it took a lot of push of the pedal to get the thing to go so we concluded that the transmission must have been shot so again we parked it. During all that I sold the 95 to my brother who drove it to work 30 miles both ways each day and it never messed up on him till one day it just wouldn't start so I bought it back from him to put the transmission in my 93. Then I found a local mechanic who does a lot of transmission work and he said to bring the 95 so he could take the trany out first and get it out of the way and he had it out in less then a day. Then I took him the 93 and he said he had one car ahead of mine and then I was next. Well that turned into a 6 month wait and I was quoted 800-900 all together. Well after 6 months and a butt load of calls he finally said he was done but he had to wait for a couple coil packs to get in the store here in town and then I could pick it up. So a week later he said it was done and when I went to pick it up he said It took a little more time then he thought it was goin to and with the coil pcks he replaced the total was 1300. Well I paid him and started driving it away and noticed that there wasn't anything different but he said the car just needed to be driven a little and it would come out of it so I drove it about 20 miles and it still wasn't doing any better. So I hooked a code reader up to it and got the codes 36 - transmission shift problem and code 56 - odm 2 problem and I was using a snap on solus edge code reader. I ended up calling the guy and telling him that it wasn't fixed at all and told him the codes coming up and he said to bring it back and he would look at it. So I did and after another 3 weeks he finally called and said that the transmission that was in it now was no good and needs replaced or repaired and by that point I had spent more trying to fix it then I had paid for it so I said just dont do anything to it cause I was just goin to just junk it. Well I got it home and asked a couple people about it and came to the conclusion that I dont think the man really swapped transmissions out and instead just changed the coil packs and thought that it fixed the problem cause when I first took it to him he mentioned that it sounded like it could be the coil packs and not the transmission. So my real ? Is can anyone help me figure out first if he really did switch it out by telling me wht to look for to tell if it was ever replaced. Or if there's a vin# on the transmission that I can mtch to the vehical to see if he did or not. and my other ? Is can anyone tell me what the codes could be or mean and wht to do next to fix it. Any advise would be amazing cause this care was bought for me by my grandpa and we spent so much time working on it together before he passed do to covid and the pandemic and I just want to see it go down the road again.

Hello, You can take the pan off and count the number of solenoids on the valvebody A 1993 transmission may have 4 solenoids on the valvebody where a 1995 may have 5 solenoids(they added one in 1995). Gary(Transmission shop owner) Had to look that info up, old school for me lol.

I took the pan off and removed the filter and there were no solenoids in there. So any clue as to were they would be located since they weren't under there.

Hello, Sorry you have 4T60E not sure why i thought 4L60E, I don't believe vin number on trans but those units have different ratios that can make codes pop up, do you feel the transmission slip? if so when do you feel it slip? If wrong ratio was put in may shift ok but throw codes. Gary

No I don't ever feel it slipping. It seems to shift fine it just feels like it doesn't wanna go. When its in drive it really feels like it doesn't wanna move unless I really give it some gas and when its in first it moves a little better but not much. When its in reverse tho it moves just fine with no hesitation.

I guess I dont know what you mean by slipping. When I press the pedal down when its in 1st I really have to press it down but in reverse it goes like it should.

I just looked up the definition and yes id say its slipping when in 1st. Its like its a delayed movement. But it shifts between gears fine its just a delayed movement.

It means is the engine RPM running higher without getting equivalent movement of the car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
