I have a 1994 Mercury Cougar. At 40-45 Miles per hour, the trans does not want to shift. It has a automatic trans. Putting the car in overdrive will help it to shift, but it will screw up again at 70. some days it is fine, other days it is infuriating. Do I need a new trans or is it something else? Help!

bring it in and have it scanned see if there are any transmission codes. You can also check transmission fluid condition, if it's burnt smelling and or blackish could be a sign of transmission problems. Also make sure its up to proper level let the car warm up to normal temprature and see if it's at the proper level.
