1996 Eclipse GS (automatic)
2.0L
138K Miles

Hello, I've got an annoying issue with my vehicle. The following only seems to happen if the weather is cold.

When I go to drive, the car jerks and shifts hard into 2nd. Once it does that, it does not shift down or up, regardless of the position of the shifter. Occasionally, but not always, the speedometer stops working. Usually when this phenomena happens I just pull over, turn my car off and then back on, and it rectifies the problem. Sometimes, it just does it again, and again. For instance, today it did it 3 times before behaving normally.

Things I have tried:
Letting the car warm up does not seem to help, I tried several times.
Servicing the transmission (new filter, fluids) was only working temporarily.

Any ideas would be great, also if you could please give an estimate of the cost to fix, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

vzae; Since the speedometer is involved in your symptom, sounds like a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) acting up. A scan of the OBD should verify.
