At first the transmission would come out of gear, I had a small parts kit put in costing me around $500 and a lot of work. After this was done, it was never right, but didn't come out of gear. Then it started making a whizzing noise. I bought a used transmission and had it put in. Costing me $700. Right after installing, it was perfect, better than ever. But got on freeway and trying to climb a grade, tried to downshift, and it wouldn't go into gear. I started on a down grade and tried to shift back into fifth gear, and it went. The next day, same thing, when I got on the freeway, shifted up good, but when tried to climb a grade and downshift it just grinned and wouldn't go into any gear. I had to pull over and wait a few minutes and start again. It also has started the whizzing sound again too. Now What? I don't have more money to spend. I have already spent over $1,200 and it still is awful. Toyota's SUCK!

I'm assuming we're taking about a manual tranny? The downshifting problem could be a syncro on the way out. Try double clutching it and see if that helps. Is the noise happening when the clutch is engaged or disengaged?

To add a thought: Is clutch fully disengaging? Not sure about this whizzing sound but it seems like clutch, perhaps the hydraulic linkage isn't fully disengaging. Down shifting is asking syncros to speed up the trans to the new speed such that it will mesh which is always more difficult that up-shifting. Double clutching is a skill at guessing the speed of the next lower gear with throttle, clutch enabled in neutral, then go for the lower gear - truckers get real good at this - a lost art for most today, T
