I have a 1997 chevy S-10 4.3 liter V6 4x4. I crawled underneath and was looking at the transmission from the bottom. I noticed a hole that is round and about twice the size of a half dollar. I could see what looked like a gear or a sprocket through the hole. Is there a plug or a cap that is supposed to snap into the hole to keep dirt and things from getting in. I also noticed transmission fluid dripping down and off of the pan. The truck has 173000 miles on it. Any ideas, thanks for the help.

I think what you are looking at is the dust shield for torque converter. I'm guessing that if that big an access hole it probably did have a plug. The leak needs to be found and fixed. If out that hole if it's what I think it could be would mean a front pump seal but I'm not looking at what you are, T
