Year:1998 make: chevy model: Cheyanne engine size: 5.7 having a major trans problem. runs great in 1st gear then when it goes into second it lags a couple of seconds before switching gears. then follows by high rpms to speed up, also trans has a high pitch winding noise

Hello, I dont see that model in my book, but i can only assume that this trans is a 4L60E, If im reading this correctly you have a 1-2 shift then when it goes into 3rd, you have high rpm(like it was put in neutral) If this is a 4L60E, the weak point of this trans is 3rd gear, not much you can do on the outside, problem is internal. If your going to build this trans and it is a 4L60E, let me know so i can give you advice to make the 3-4 clutch last longer. Gary

Gary - some info is thought to be (own one in a 2,500 series) the "Cheyenne" means lack of any trim package or base model - no features unless ordered and not listed for some reason. Kinda means build to suit your own needs model. Being a 1,500 should be the 4L60E unless specifically ordered new for the other only one not likely IMO but that's just what I've noticed for some time. OP - Count trans pan bolts if unsure. From memory (could be trouble there) 16 or 17 is the heavier duty model, 4L80E (I think).... T (edited from 17 to 18 bolts to 16 to 17 bolts)

this is a 1998 - start simple- scan for CODES - yes even if the CK ENG LITE is off... lets get the codes- they may help ID the trans. Also the 4L60 series pans are almost square in appearance where the 4L80 is noticeable rectangular almost shoe box shaped .

? Oh my - if code reader will tell go by that. My own shows tapered back not square and has a torx headed OE drain plug. Didn't recount but parts shows 16 or 17 bolt (I didn't count them this time) is the difference not as I said and edited back a couple posts. I'm sure it's right one OE for my own as ordered new. Permanent pan gasket used or about $50 bucks for just a pan gasket! I plain dunno what ordering it (bought used) all HD everything, coolers and all extra for trans, oil etc but no carpet, PW or PDL as said pick your own toys on that model is what I think you did up to with or with out a bed or rear bumper if to be a camper for example, T
