1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0 engine 187,318 miles not a full year after i recieved the vehicle, in 2008. It started having a issue on the highway in third gear...like push/pull/push/pull as far as power very subtley, it would move you a little while you drove and would go away but happen periodicly after getting into third and sometimes later again. friend said it might be the injector, replaced it, replaced plugs too and fuel line. then 7 months later while i was driving from a gas station it went into third then the car jerked down in speed, RPMs went sky high and third has been gone ever since then...it willl not shift into third. automatic transmission and inorder to even drive it short distances you must manualy use L1 and L2 because it will act god aweful trying to get into third and shake a little if you dont stay slow..around 22mph. Also...it was my first car but..i found it odd when i baught it used that it only had three gears....i thought autos were atleast 4 or 5. but it would redline before it found a 4th so i figured maybe a 4th wasn't ever on it. additional info: lights sometimes dont work on dash at night or a certain speeds, some weird harness was handmade that went to radio, lambo doors needed mew parts because installed wrong the first time, car had been overly modded by previous owner, 3'' off the ground, underglows were wired with radio aswell.

First, most automatics up through mid 2000 have 4 "gears"; 1,2,3 and overdrive. The shift from 3 to overdrive is often so gentle it is difficult to detect and might not Lets jump to the solution: put some lucas trans additive in and drive it to a trans shop. Time is of the essence. If you want to do the work yourself; read on. Check the sticker under the hood to verify this: I think you have "40/50 Series A/T" transmission or a variant of it (the number would be f4_5_). I think it's happened in other f4_ _ _ transmissions as well. I've had recent experience with this trans and the following issue on my Endeavor. The trans and it variants have been put in a number of cars by mitsubishi, chrysler, kia, and I think a couple others. This problem generally shows up around 80,000 miles. The wave spring and the filter: The "wave spring" sits next to the "low-reverse brake piston". (google it, you'll find pics and stories). The "wave spring" is 1mm thick and 3mm wide and about 12? inches in length. This spring is FAR to thin so after awhile it starts breaking into pieces. With the discs no longer held tight they start slipping. Worse yet the trans filter is of poor quality. After some time it sucks a chunk of the broken wave spring through the filter and it lodges in the oil pump. Thats' when you start noticing big problems. Finally, the trochoid gear and pump housing are made of aluminum. The wave spring piece breaks the trochoid gear, which runs for a little while longer (with reduced pressure) until it slips away from the input shaft and without fluid pressure, your car refuses to move (for me, while in traffic). Mitsubishi has never acknowledged this problem openly (not even a TSB), HOWEVER, the replacement wave spring is at least 4 times as thick and 1/4 wider. The oil pump replacement is steel. (do you think they discovered the problem?). The transmission needs to be rebuilt. If you do it yourself, make sure you use a brand new snap rings on clutch spring components (see "failed trans rebuild" post).
