(Eddie Bauer, 5.4 L, 129,000 miles)

Having difficulty troubleshooting 4 X 4 issues. (A local mechanic had it for 6 hours and ended up claiming it WAS working.) This is how it has acted:

1. Had it offroad, neither 4 high nor 4 low would engage. No lights on.
2. Mechanic worked on it, ended up saying it worked fine, later claimed he replaced the fuse.
3. Checked it before I left mechanic, could hear it engage.
4. Got home, would not engage.
5. Tried several more times over the next week and never worked, until today... seemed as though it engaged after I turned the switch with a little authority.
6. Had trouble getting it to disengage.
7. Lights stayed on for 4 X 4 LOW, but was able to drive it on a parking lot.
8. Finally got lights to turn off, assumed it was driving in AWD, seemed fine.
9. Three hours later, turned truck on, 4 X 4 lights are BACK ON and truck feels like it is driving in 4 X 4 HIGH (even though LOW light is on). Getting 5 MPG while lights are on.
10. Odd quirk (a coincidence): speedometer suddenly not working... needle moves but nowhere near accurate.

I'm thinking of replacing the 4 X 4 switch and perhaps the electric motor since those are two things I think I can do and that I can easily get used parts for.

HELP!

How serious is you "off road" use? TMK this isn't close to the right vehicle for wild mud and rock climbing more of a passenger vehicle.
? After 6 hours a mechanic finds a fuse and it worked then failed again?

IDK - is this all smashed up underneath, packed with mud, rocks, brush and junk? Deeper water use crossing and so on done on purpose?

If so it's abused - wiring, gearcases I doubt can take hard use like that on this,

First step would be to scan the GEM to see if any transfer case codes are stored. You'll need an enhanced scan to access the GEM. Write down the code(s) and post them in here. If there are code(s), it might give some direction.

I moved this to the transmission category.
