I have a 99 Safari 2WD (160k miles) with no reverse. It was shifting hard from 1-2 on the way home the other day. No major problems before this. All forward gears seems to work properly. Called around and all the shops want to do a rebuild. Did some googling and one of the things I could do to dx this is to disconnect the trans case connector to see if the reverse works. I am not a trans guy and would have all the work done by a shop but I dont want to have throw a rebuild at this if its not going to fix the problem. Any tips on how I can check if it does need a rebuild? Could it be the sun shell even though the forward gears are working? (edit out link to another forum - not allowed) 'The manual valve directs oil to the reverse passages , not the shift solenoids. You can unplug the 4L60e main trans case connector and the trans will shift to reverse (If reverse functions)'

4L60E no reverse is often serious....first BASICS fluid, CODES, you can easily try 2 tests,. I won't explain how why but try- 1- as you said disconnect the trans connector 2) in low gear - accelerate @10mph then foot off pedal -is there compression braking... answer and we may have more direction....

Hello, Trans connector is located right side middle of the unit right behind the side servo, you have to squeeze the connector to release the tab, dont just pull up or pry or you will break the tab, In my opinion, your problem is the low/reverse clutch is bad, as long as all foward gears work ok. I have never seen an eletrical problem casuing no reverse on a 4L60E. If the shell was bad you would have no 2nd,4th or reverse. Gary

The cheapest was from a non trans shop that a buddy (who is a tow truck driver) recommended. They said 875. Highest was 1300

Totally agree Kev2 with the SHOP does the R&R despite any possible savings for this exact layout of trans shouldn't be the lion's share of work anyway. How could you really give a warranty if they didn't? Who blames who if the installation causes a problem especially trans work when lines, wires, flush out fluid thru cooler, proper fill and so on come into play? T
