HELP!

My transmission is stuck in 2nd gear. The check engine light is on and I took it to a local mechanic. He cleaned up the ground wires, even replaced some and it only fixed it for a few miles then it would "studder shift" a couple times then shift really hard and stick back in 2nd and the check engine light would come back on. He said that it is throwing a "low voltage code" but he couldnt fix it and I would have to take it to a dealer.... 95 bucks just for a diag. >.< When you cruse along at 2-3000 RPMS it "studder" shifts. Like it cant decide what gear it wants to go into or something. We have replaced the the TMC already and it made no difference. The dash where it reads what gear you are in when you first start it up has squares around all the gears. Then it goes back to normal after a few minutes. It does not read that it is in P or N. When I tried to put it from D to 3rd it doesnt shift. But it does when you take it to L. It even "studders" when sitting still like at a stop sign or whatever. Any help would be APPRECIATED!

What trouble codes numbers are you getting? There should be code(s) in the PCM (powertrain control module) and also in the TCM (transmission control module). To get codes from the TCM you need a high end scan tool.

The transmission is being defaulted by the TCM, but we need the code numbers to find out why.

We don't have the codes. However we have found out that it could be a lock out silinoid. We are going to try this next. Any suggestions?

Get the trouble codes. The squares around your shift indicator mean that the BCM (body control module) isn't getting any information from the TCM for gear lever position information.

Don't understand what you mean by lock out solenoid. There is no lock out solenoid. There is an interlock solenoid, but that has to do with keeping the gear shift lever from coming out of park unless you have your foot on the brake pedal.

The lock out silonoid is in the chilton book it is on the transaxel housing. It locks out the torque converter from engaging.

Are you sure this is a 3 speed A670? The only thing electronic on an A670/31TH is the TCC lock up solenoid. I don't even think the A670 was with the 3.3L. It was on the 2.4L.

The 4 speed 41TE is electronically controlled and uses a TCM. You stated the TCM was replaced, but that doesn't make sense because you stated you have a 3 speed.

31TH

41TE

I'm not 100% sure. I'll be sure to check that. Is it possiable that the trany was swapped? However the dash displays P,R,N,D,3,L and the TCM is mounted in the factory location with a full wire harness.

If that is true, you have the 41TE 4 speed. I highly don't think it was swapped out.

There is no lockout solenoid on a 41TE. The TCM uses a solenoid called a LR/CC solenoid to apply the torque converter clutch. You still need to find out what trouble codes are being stored. The TCM can turn off the EATX relay if there is a problem causing the transmission to default. The EATX relay supplies power to the solenoids.

You may need to take it to a transmission shop.

So does the lockup silinoid on the 31th serve the same pourpose as the LR/CC on the 41th? Could they cause the same problem? What exactly is the EATX?

Ok, apparently it is the 41TE. We took it to a transmission shop and he attempted to hook it up to find the codes. He said that he could not get in to the computer system to see what it him . Something about it locked him out. ?

Re: 1999 Plym Voyager 2wd 3.3 3speed tranny Sign In

If he can't communicate with the TCM, either the TCM is offline for some reason, there is a bus communication fault, or his scanner has an issue and can't get into it. Can he scan the other computer modules in the vehicle? If he has a communication code(s) in the other modules for loss of communication with the TCM, you'll know the TCM is offline for some reason.

The TCM can be down if it is missing power or ground. Look at the electrical schematic and connector pin out for the TCM and check the power and ground circuits at the connector.

Ok, we got a computer on it and it read it just fine. It threw out several codes. P1775, P0760, and P0750. All were selinoids (cant spell it) and one was valve latched in L U position. Any clues? Thanks again!

Has your mechanic diagnosed the codes using the trouble code charts for the codes that were received?
