2000 CRV auto trans problem

2000 Honda CR-V 2.0 Auto 80,000 miles Hi folks, great forum. Im taking one of the above in part ex next week. The owner isnt mechanical at all and says the auto box wont shift up the gears He has taken it to honda here in the UK who told him (get ready for this) Its the ECU or (something else)! yeah, right. my cat could have told him that and it cost him 160 quid or about 240 dollars I have yet to collect and drive it but have started it and the exhaust seems very sooty, Any ideas before I start the diagnosis? If it's running rich and or poorly to make soot out exhaust better hurry to fix it as that could kill the converter and 120 quid will seem like chump change! How did they diagnose this? Just out of the blue say that was it or by a code reading and diagnosis? Cheers back at you............. T

Hi, They have failed to diagnose it. The vehicle is running rich, thats my observation from a brief visual of the exhaust using the white kitchen towel method and its smells rich. I wont be driving it anywhere once I have it. Not until I have fixed the issues. So, anyone know if there is a simple reason why both the rich exhaust gas and the auto bux not shifting up might have occoured at the same time? I bet its a ssimple as a sensoe someplace. I dont know at this point if there is a fault code stored, the dealer may have cleared them. Cheers Al.

It's running rich via your 'towel' test. Bet you could just smell it too - not too long please. Basically that means it isn't burning the fuel delivered and alone that's not going to tell you why. Anything that can make the engine run improperly is going to send the signal along to 'auto box' as you call it to keep it in an appropriate gear for the info it gets. Oh my - When all things normal it is calculating a ton of info. Engine temp, air temp and flow coming in, throttle position, speed, RPM load on engine and lots more and calculate all of that and can be one incorrect input that throws it all off. MIL - Malfunction Indicator Lamp should be lit and if reset would come back fast again with hard faults noted. May have just one fault causing a domino effect of other noted problems because of it so needs a real good code reading and interpreted to narrow it down. At a minimum it needs a competent diagnosis or could be a futile and expensive parts toss game, T

Indeed sir, I have ordered a code reader Im thinking its connected to distributor as the tacho does not operate at all. I hear the blue wire sends the feed to the tach so I now gotta find the ECU and do a continuity test. Cheers Al

White towel test? Never heard of that one. You can take a white towel on a perfectly running vehicle and have black on the towel. The engine computer has feedback to determine if the engine is running lean or is running rich. If it was actually running rich, the check engine light would be on for something like P0172. You'd have to look at the fuel trims to see if the computer is compensating for a rich condition. It is possible the ECU may be the reason the transmission doesn't upshift, but that would have to be checked out with some test equipment. Don't be surprised if the dealer is right if they went as far to make sure the transmission had power and found the transmission solenoids were not getting commands from the ECU. The tachometer input comes from the ECM for the tachometer. If there was a problem with a position sensor in the distributor relaying engine speed information, the engine wouldn't run. The blue wire on your distributor isn't used for the tach on the 2000. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Its running very rich indeed Just bought a code reader, connected it to the 3 pin plug via an adapter and it cannot establish a link. Anyone know what protocol is used in the 99CRV.
