I've got a 2000 Mercury Mystique GS 2.0L (automatic) with about 89,000 miles on it. It was purchased used in 2004 w/approx. 40,000 miles on it, so I'm not sure of initial maintenance on it. Maintenance now is like clockwork. My problem is that when I'm accelerating the car will lurch/jerk/buck between what feels like 2nd and 3rd (40 MPH). Even after it shifts gears, it will randomly buck. When it bucks, the RPM jumps and comes back down. There aren't any engine lights on, nor are there any leaks under my car. I checked the trans fluid, and it was a little lower than half way between the lines on the dipstick. All other fluids check out. When it bucks, there is a weird noise (like a ker-thunk) that happens. Once the first *ker-thunk* happens, it will happen faster until the car gives me whiplash. This all happened over driving it to work on the freeway, and on side roads coming back home. I'm posting because I want to get a quick idea of what's going on and the price to fix it. This car has a few more issues with it (cracked windshield, paint coming off, rust, and flex pipe comes off once every 6 months), so if it's a pricey fix (like a new trans) I may consider getting a new ride. Thanks!
