Hi there. I have a 2.6 liter, standard,2000 VW jetta with over 180k miles. I just recently bought it off a private seller.
However I went to the store the other day, and even though the car was in neutral. It was in a gear, I had my step brother come out and push me backwards while I held in the clutch.

Turns out it was 5th gear, which I hadn't even used on the trip to the store at all.

So my goal was to just get it back to my house, driving in 5th the whole way.
(I know, not good for the clutch)
Well halfway home (5 min) my neutral was neutral again and I had all my gears back.

Well it just did the same thing to me today. But pretty sure I did burn out my clutch today.

Does anyone know what could be causing it to go into 5th gear while its off and in neutral...?

Another symptom is while I was driving on the interstate it slipped outta 5th and into neutral but only when I hit the gas pedal. It only did that twice. But it happened none the less.

Why do people insist on driving vehicles that aren't driveable?

You started out with what sounds like an external linkages problem and now by trying to drive it, the transmission has to be removed to replace the clutch.

I had no choice but to drive it. I had my kid in the car and it was pouring down rain.

That's what cell phones and tow trucks are for.

Your the one that has to foot the bill now.
