2000 grand cherokee flooding and wont shift Sign In

Lastnight after parking my grand cherokee i went to start it up agian and it would run fine until i put it in drive and it would almost bog down, after playing with the gas it progressively got worse. I was playing with the shifter while doing this thinking i was stuck in sugar sand and noticed when the shifter was in either R N D 1 2 it would want to go forward like it was in drive. This was even happening in reverse. After trying to crank it agian i could smell gas like it was flooding out and would run rough and eventually die. I have no clue what this could be! Someone please help my jeeps still sitting in the middle of the woods! Its a 2000 with the 4.0 and it is 4x4.

What happened last night that you would leave the Jeep in the woods?

If the check engine light is on, scan the PCM to see what trouble code(s) is stored. Write down the numbers.

Need some more details. What were you doing with the Jeep up until the time it started acting up? Transmission shouldn't be in a forward gear with the transmission in neutral.

I was trail driving. On it a little hard but everything was perfect until i shut it off for about 15 minutes and then i started it up and ran fine until i put it in reverse and i went forward and drive would bog down the engine and it would eventually die.

Have you inspected the shifter cable where it connects to the transmission? Is there any damage underneath such as damaged wiring harnesses, fuel line, exhaust, and/or etc?

I managed to drive it home. When the shifter selector is in park it idles really low like its under load. When in reverse it feels like it wants to go backwards but something holds it back and when i press on the gas it bogs down. When in nueatral, drive, 1 and 2 it wants to go forward. I cant seem to get the engine over 1500 rpms without boging down. Everything looks fine underneith. The linkage looks good and so does all the wiring.

Looks like there is a problem with the transmission itself. Almost like a manual valve that isn't in the right position or you have some sort of cross flow occurring between hydraulic circuits. You'd have to drop the pan to inspect the manual valve. You could also do line and circuit pressure checks.
