I have a 2000 suburan 2500. 145,000k. Great shape but, about a year ago I noticied tranny issues. While driving for a long time on a freeway, I would get off the ramp and stop at the stop sign. When I began to drive, shifting would become very hard and shake the truck. I found if I pulled over and turned off the motor and restarted, the problem went away. I check the fluid, it was at normal levels. My wife then began to notice that while driving up a hill, usually the same spot on the road and everytime, there was a really hard shift, probably in overdrive. This has been going on for a year without getting any worse. My neighbor, a service tech, took the truck and pulled up a pile of "slip codes" and said, the tranny is shot. My thought is, well hell it's not getting worse, is it really shot? Any how as of late, the truck would occassionly shudder on mostly level ground at about 45mph. It felt like you were driving over a rumble strip. It also began to spit out fluid out of the overflow tube on the top of the tranny as well.

So, every shop I talk to says the same thing, it's shot. Keep in mind the truck is very driveable and this stuff only occasionally happens. My wife, the primary driver is concerned it'll break at a bad time and ask me to have it replaced. I took it to Chevy. I got a call back and they said, "Why do you want us to replace the tranny"? I gave the story. He said do you want us to look for codes? Diagnosis first? I said "yes". Ok, so the bottom line is they replaced the tranny. The paper work says "fluid a little low" Scan checked engine and tranny without any codes. Little whine in low gear".

Interestingly, however, when I called later to find out when my wife could pick up the rig, the service tech said that they had found codes? What?

I called and talked to a guy this morn who is not a mechanic, but was in the shop when they were looking at the tranny. He remembers the guys talking about how burnt the fluid was. He says that usually means the clutch is burning up.

What? Did I just throw cash out the window or what? Can someone out there enlighten me?

The key is 145,000 miles! If that's an original tranny it would not be a waste if you expect more dependable life out of it,
