I drive a 2001 Mazda 626 automatic and a couple of problems popped up about 2 weeks ago. First the O/D off light started blinking at me but when I turned the car off and then back on and it stopped. Ever since then I have noticed a new problem. When I get past third gear then come to a complete stop, it stays at third. This seems to only happen after the car warms up though. I have no problem going down to second or first when I hit the gas hard but when I come to a stop it doesn't down shift. I can shift into first manually or neutral then back to drive and it will work fine but any other time it doesn't. When I went in for an oil change the guys there also said I was leaking transmission fluid. I filled it back up about half way up the hashed line then took it to a transmission specialist. I told them the same problems. They rebuilt the transmission and charged me 1500 but the shifting problem remains the same. Can anyone tell me if I got screwed and what the problem really is?

The flashing overdrive light is like a check engine light for the transmission. It is telling you that the trans control module has recognized a malfunction and recorded a trouble code. You need to have the trans module scanned to retrieve the stored codes and that will give you a starting place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

They did that but the shifting problem still exists. That's the main question here.

Did what? Reading the code doesn't fix anything. They have to troubleshoot the code and resolve the issue. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

cjb145 : I don't get this thread? You had a problem with shifting, took it to a trans shop and they diagnosed and charged you $1,500 to rebuild it but it did the same thing? The exact problem from this shop should have been addressed right away with the shop right away! If they are blowing you off now that's a problem out of the gate. You paid, they diagnosed, it didn't work out so the problem is with the shop now. The job didn't work out and I say they own it now to make it right, T

They scanned the control module and got an error code. Apparently that error code meant they needed to rebuild the transmission. They did that. That's what cost me 1500. The error code no longer shows up but the shifting problem still remains. I brought it back and even rode with one of the mechanics on a test drive to show him what I was talking about. It happened again but nothing showed up on the scanner. They are looking into it now but I am getting the feeling they giving me the runaround to avoid me utilizing the warranty on their work. That or they have no idea how to fix it.

There may be an issue with the valve body or in something else they assembled but it should be their problem. They diagnosed and repaired it.

Quote ">>That or they have no idea how to fix it.<<" Maybe they don't and need help themselves to fix it or that trans might have been unfit to redo - that happens and you redo a core one used in some cases. I think we are all on the same page with this that they are responsible now and if they lose $$ on this job it happens and they should eat it. If they needed to send it to another place to figure out then still up to them. IDK - maybe they don't have the bucks to cover their own warranty! Yikes - hope not! T
