Rear main > it's actually supposed to seep or it would burn out from lack of lube! People go nuts to see spots on a parking spot the fix is worse than the one drip a day thing trust me. Leave that alone.


Hey - you should just know since you've got this vehicle all apart apparently nothing is going to stop you to know a seriously leaking rear main is a sign of a worn engine possibly beyond any reasonable long term fix! Yes - bearings wear out not a good thing and beat up the seal old or new the fix is redoing the crankshaft or another engine if real - know that. Many leaks are NOT from what you think too rather leaking from above something fooling you so for this item a good thing not to touch unless you have a real problem or you are apt to make it your new problem or kill the engine over it so leave it alone!
Arggh - subject to opinion but remember I said it's normal to drip just not much. LOOK AT A NEW CAR SHOWROOM THEY PUT A MAT UNDER CARS NEW TO CATCH THAT DRIP! Should tell you something right there, my job to tell you why,

Thanks again Tom. I didn't realize this thread went to page 2 (reason for my lack of response). Lol
I really didn't want to mess with those seals anyway. So that helps me to feel okay about just leaving them alone now. I haven't done anything yet since it's been out, due to work and just the time of year in general. But I will definitely keep you updated as I make progress on this project.

You should automatically get them once you have replied to a thread so check your spam folder. It is being blocked somewhere.

You can keep it all on one page also if you go to your user profile and click on Display settings and then change Forum max hits and post max hits to 50.

It's all of your server, device and how long a thread gets. You should mark it "NOT SPAM" and just check in anyway. Also look up or down for the "WATCH THREAD" seems to renew notices. Using "Clueless Win 10" can't spell, do pics, compresses everything and server sold off anything tricky to MSN for me makes it increasingly more of a pain but of course pay the bill and new fees.
Pretty sure you need to use the same device or who knows what or where things will go but it should show and be here, Tom

This was posted in the MG Venture thread. I'm considering doing this as it seems like a good thing to do as my old transmission DID have a lot of metal particles in it. Just a little leery about the water part. Any advice on this??

"Do get some cans of Kooler Klean and flush the ever living hell out of your transmission cooler and lines. Neglecting that part is the fasted way to waste a perfectly good trans in short order. After the cleaner I like to hook up a hose to hot water and flush multiple times in both directions. Blow out with air after that. Now when you go to start the engine leave your return line unhooked and hold it over a can. Have someone in the van running the key for you, and when all that comes out is fresh trans fluid you can shut it off and hook that return line up. This way you have every drop of water out as well."

No water anything IMO. Flush away and copious air every which way till known clear. Skeptical of a canned flush do check what that really is. Know that ATF is an oil and water don't mix but will in an operating trans with the violent turbulence make a foamy and very destructive mix for the trans so would choose just ATF which is highly detergent on it's own and meant to be. Didn't re-read the long thread Marine Grunt did but know he was infinitely better equipped than you probably are which I can't know,

So yeah.....I'm still here. I went to move the replacement transmission tonight so I can remove the side cover. I didn't have a helper and I tipped it the wrong way causing the torque converter to fall off the unit. It only fell about a foot. I am hoping that nothing got jarred loose or broken in there. Is there any special way to put it back on? There are 3 separate shafts and splines that need to be lined up. I notice on the larger female spline inside the TC, there is a tooth missing in 3 locations equally spaced around the diameter. And there is a hole on the larger shaft of the transmission. Does any of that need to be lined up a special way?
I ordered some new shift solenoids as well as the pressure solenoid. I'm thinking axle seals wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Just a little concerned about the TC right now.

Chances are, it's not damaged.

It doesn't take a lot of talent to get it back in, just patience.Slide it back onto the shaft and hold a slight pressure with the palm of your hand while rotating the converter. Continue doing this until it drops all the way back in. That means the outer surface of the converter is below the outer edge of the bellhousing and fully seated.

I was hoping that was all that was to it. I wonder why they left a tooth off that large female spline in the TC every third of the way around.....
I was thinking to drain the old oil out of it and put an equal amount of fresh oil into it.

You can pour the oil out but I wouldn't try to refill it. The oil will just spill all over. It will fill when you fill the transmission and run the engine.

Are those trans. cooler lines wide open or is there a check ball in there?
I decided to blow out the trans cooler lines with air to get the old fluid out. Weird thing happened. Once all the fluid was out, I was getting a little back pressure from the air and I was giving short bursts. Eventually, something came flying out the other end. I heard it hit something like one of my wooden blocks and bounce to the floor, but I didn't actually see it. I looked all over and the only thing I found was a small tan plug. Almost looked like wood. At first I was thinking it was wood, but it didn't smell like wood and as I rolled it around in my fingers, it became soft and mushy as if it was hardened grease. But it wasn't oily like it would have just been in trans. oil. So I'm not sure if that was what blew out.
Is there a check ball or anything in the trans. cooler that I might have screwed up or blew out?

I was thinking the same thing. If the oil wasn't flowing properly, then it may have been overheating.
Well the air blows thru freely now!! Haha

Does the TC have to lock onto a pump inside the 4T65e transmission? If so, how do I know if I got it locked on properly?

No, it doesn't lock in as you found out when it fell out. It just has to get fully seated so it is totally inside the bellhousing.

As long as Passlock didn't lose memory, all you have to do is drive it for the adaptives to relearn.

Yeah, the passlock is what I'm afraid of. Guess I'll find out in a day or 2.

It's pretty rare for Passlock to lose memory but it can happen. You will have a dash indicator to tell you if that is the case.

This is a very long transmission thread and I don't want to make it even longer by turning it into a Passlock thread. If you have that issue, please start another thread.

Back together. Gently ran it thru the ringer for about 15 to 20 miles. So far, it seems to be okay. Gonna run it for about 300 miles or so, and if all is still good, I'm gonna drop the generic Dexron III fluid that I used and refill with some ACDelco VI.

Thank you so much to everyone that offered me help and advice for this project. I appreciate it dearly. And I'm really happy I found this site and hope to read thru more threads just for learning things.
