Hi. My son has a 2001 Sable with 77,000 original miles on it. He was driving and stopped at a light and the car suddenly would not drive in gear. There was no warning that it might be a prob with the trans. It shifts into all gears but does not drive. No noise...nothing. I checked the trans fluid and it was pink, very little to no metal shavings. I am getting it twoed this weekend to a shop for it to get checked, but was wondering if this sounds like anything other than the trans itself? Thanks.

Hey Gary. Let me get this from my son. He is at work so it may be a couple hours but I will post it. Doesn't have any gear at all. Very strange as it all of sudden went with no warning and has no noise, but a slight "whirring" when you press the gas pedal.

Hello, Ok, transmission is an AX4N, i would say 1 of 2 things happened, 1- converter splines stripped out where the pump shaft goes into the converter or 2- possible the rear planetary gear may have broke. The most common is the stripped converter splines, the trans would have to come out to see this. Just one more thing, if the car has park, that would rule out an axle problem. Gary

Yes. It has park. So if it is a spline issue what $$ am I looking at? I know it is tough for you to estimate, but.... and thanks.

Well, it would be a matter of pulling the trans, installing converter and reinstalling the trans, i have to look up labor on that and will let you know, i'll give you the labor time, i use mitchell on demand. I will see if i could get it on my home computer but i may have to check tomorrow morning when i get to my shop

Hello, On this car remove and replace time is showing between 8 and 9 hours, (seems like alot to me) then you would have the cost of the converter and fluid( i would suggest a new front seal as well). I would like to know what the diagnosis is when you bring the car in. Gary
