My 2001 daewoo nubira 1.6ltr gears are very stiff to engage and sometimes don't unless have turned engine off then put in gear first. There was no lead up to problem. I would like to know if anyone could advise on the best way to fix problem

I take that as it is hard to shift. A common cause is clutch is not totally releasing and frequently caused by a failure in hydraulic linkage if equipped - many are hydraulic. If fluid level gets too low there's a leak to be found and fixed. Those can fail without a leak too. General on that set up: A master cylinder with the fluid, line to a flex hose and on to a slave cylinder the released the clutch. Anything wrong with any of that will cause hard shifting, especially downshifts. May not be that at all but would check that out first, T
